NN4DA Discussion: State Partners Designing Fee-For-Service Programs, Mondays in May and June 2024, 2:00 to 3:00 pm MDT, link (May 13, 20, June 3). Several NN4DA state partners are discussing how to develop or expand the work they do with authorizers directly to support their authorizing work. These programs also provide strategies to provide long-term financial sustainability to state partners’ other programming.
NACSA Third Thursday: Ready To Open, (aka Year Zero) Thursday, May 16, registration. NACSA is releasing a guidebook related to the Ready to Open process, which others often refer to as Year Zero. Learn about the latest developments in managing this crucial aspect of charter authorizing and talk with your peers about how to incorporate the latest recommendations into your practice.
NN4DA Webinar: Joint CCAP/NN4DA Webinar on Anti-Fraud Task Force, May 30, 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm MDT, registration. After California’s charter sector and its authorizers suffered a $400 million fraud, CCAP convened a state-wide taskforce to discuss ways to prevent, identify, and address charter school fraud. The taskforce recently released the CCAP Anti-Fraud Task Force Report: Protecting California Public Schools Against Fraud, which provides recommendations of interest to authorizers in any state. Hear from CCAP leaders about their work to convene the taskforce and discuss the recommendations’ implications for your state.
Federal Charter School Program Seeking Reviewers for Various CSP Grant Competitions, Due May 31, application. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) Charter School Program (CSP) is conducting several grant competitions now, including those for State Entities and Charter Management Organizations. As part of that process, ED is always looking for qualified experts to review applications. The current call for reviewers is available here, and applications are due by May 31. Serving as a reviewer for ED, in addition to public service, is one of the best ways to learn how to write a strong application and eventually win a federal grant. It is also a chance for people with expertise in charter authorizing and familiarity district authorizers to inform the decisions about grants based on their unique expertise.
NN4DA Incubating State Partners Growing into their Next Phase, Friday, June 7, 11:00 to 11:45 am MDT, registration. In this call, NN4DA Incubating State Partners will meet with the more experienced NN4DA groups to discuss their path from shared idea to an organization or other type of initiative.
NACSACON 2024, is Oct. 21-24 in Houston, TX. The call for proposals is now open for which applications are due June 10. The conference hotel block is also open for reservations. Note, the NN4DA Annual Meeting will be October 20-21 in Houston, hold the date and join your NN4DA partners in person in Houston too!
CCAP: California Charter Authorizing Conference, June 18-21, Irvine, CA, registration. The CCAP conference is a great opportunity for NN4DA members from other states to see an example of a strong state-authorizer association in action. While designed for California authorizers, much of the content will be equally applicable to authorizers from other states.
NN4DA Public Nature of Charter Schools Work Group, Monday June 24, 2:00 to 3:00 pm MDT, contact Alex Medler for login information or to join the email list for this group. NN4DA convenes a regular call to discuss issues related to the legal developments that address the public nature of charter schools, including the religious affiliation and operations of charter schools, and the application of state and federal constitutional rights in the charter sector.
